LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Guillermo del Toro’s surrealist portrait of interspecies romance “The Shape of Water” won the award for best picture on Sunday night at the 90th annual Academy Awards.

“Water” also won del Toro the award for best director, one of 4 wins of thirteen overall nominations for the film.

In his acceptance speech for best picture, del Toro discussed his own experience as a Mexican immigrant.

“I am an immigrant,” he said. “And in the last 25 years, I’ve been living in a country all of our own. Part of it is here, part of it is in Europe, part of it is everywhere. Because I think the greatest thing that art does, and that our industry does, is erase the lines in the sand when the world tells us to make them deeper.”

Gary Oldman picked up the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” while Frances McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The Oscar is McDormand’s second after she won in 1996 for “Fargo.”

Comedian Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for his turn at horror films with “Get Out.”

Hosted by late night host Jimmy Kimmel, the 90th Oscars were broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
