LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Preposterous giant robots battling equally preposterous giant monsters proved to be the key to finally pushing Marvel-Disney’s ‘Black Panther’ from its lofty position atop the worldwide box office this weekend.

Universal’s sci-fi sequel “Pacific Rim:” Uprising” debuted to a comfortable $150.5M in revenue worldwide over the weekend, according to estimates compiled by comScore.

In domestic theaters however, Pacific Rim generated just $28.0M in its debut weekend, a smaller take than its predecessor, the Guillermo Del Toro-helmed “Pacific Rim” which generated $37 million when it hit the theaters in 2013.

In international theaters, Black Panther slipped to #4, generating $29.6M, including $16.7M from North American markets and pushing its cumulative revenue north of $1.23bn

Other movies opening this weekend included “Sherlock Gnomes” Paramount’s animated sequel about, bizarrely enough, garden gnomes, failed to generate much interest from the movie going public and notched up just $10.6M

Wes Anderson’s latest entry, “Isle of Dogs” (Fox Searchlight) scared up $10.6M $1.57 million in just 27 theaters on the strength of solid reviews in the critical press.
