(CelebrityAccess) – Grammy-winner, actress and activist Janelle Monáe has inked a first-look production deal with Universal Pictures.

Under the terms of the new contract, Monáe and her team at Wondaland Pictures will focus on “multi-genre content with an emphasis on championing underrepresented voices and groundbreaking perspectives.”

Commenting on the news, Universal chairman Donna Langley said: “There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront. Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio.”

The studio announced the deal Monday along with news that Monáe would also be starring in Universal’s Welcome to Marwen, which is scheduled to open December 21, as well as Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic, Harriet, which is due out in 2019.

Monáe has previously starred in a number of high profile projects including Moonlight and Hidden Figures. She is also starring in the STX animated movie “UglyDolls,” and will voice star in Disney’s live-action version of Lady and the Tramp.

Her third studio album, Dirty Computer, is out now via Wondaland/Bad Boy/Atlantic Records.
