That Instagram Egg? Yup, It's Viral Advertising With A Reveal After The Super Bowl

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) Up until now, an egg was just an egg – on Instagram – but it has been revealed that, unless Hulu bought the account recently, it’s actually part of a marketing campaign for Hulu with the full mission to come clear tomorrow night.

The Instagram egg was posted on the social media site Jan. 4 on the account world_record_egg with the sole purpose of getting the most “likes” in Instagram’s history, taking a title away from Kylie Jenner. The owner has never revealed himself or herself.

“Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this 🙌” was the singular statement alongside a brown egg. Once the egg beat the score with 52 million likes, it drew worldwide attention including a feature on CNN called “Meet the egg that broke Kylie Jenner’s Instagram record.”

Yesterday, The Atlantic said the egg account was up for sale with VaynerMedia’s Nik Sharma telling the outlet, “Being the first brand to crack out of the egg is worth at least $10 million” and advises his clients “to spend on the egg instead of the Super Bowl.”

A potential buyer was viral marketing agency Jerry Media of Fyre Fest infamy, which pitched a campaign for a non-profit organization that wants to impeach President Donald Trump.

“In a slide deck, Jerry Media proposed that the egg crack to reveal the words Impeach Trump as Trump popped out and did the chicken dance,” the article said. “The agency even created a short animated video demonstrating the stunt.”

Now it appears the egg is part of a viral marketing campaign by Hulu, or at least the online video channel has bought the account. The egg has turned into a football and the tagline is “The wait is over 😅 All will be revealed this Sunday following the Super Bowl 👀 Watch it first, only on @hulu.”

Hulu has been keeping quiet but obviously not all of the responses have been positive. Yet the egg continues to have nearly 4 million followers.
