PARIS (CelebrityAccess) – Iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at the age of 85.

The German-born couturier and photographer died in Paris on Tuesday morning.

Best known for his transformative work as the creative director behind French luxury fashion house Chanel, Lagerfeld got his start in Paris working under Pierre Balmain in the 1950s. From there he moved on to the House of Patou, freelanced for Chloé, and was eventually hired by Fendi in 1967 as a consultant director, responsible for modernizing the Italian house’s fur lines.

Lagerfeld’s health came under speculation recently after he missed two Chanel fashion shows in Paris last month. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he had appeared at the end of every show since he joined Chanel in 1983.

Paolo Righi, CEO of Lagerfeld’s eponymous label, said in a statement: “The world has lost an icon. Karl Lagerfeld was a creative genius; he was influential, curious, powerful and passionate. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.”
