LONDON (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — Despite reports in British tabloids that David Bowie was planning to play live dates for the first time since 2006, the artist's reps have been singing a different tune.
A spokesperson for Bowie told NME that there "There are currently no plans for any live dates" and unnamed, but 'informed' sources told Billboard that the stories earlier stories were exaggerated and inaccurate. Admittedly, much could be made about the meaning of 'currently' and 'exaggerated' in those two denials, but for now at least, the story seems to be bogus.
The story first gained traction when British tabloid The Mirror reported that Live Nation and AEG were squaring off in a bidding war to promote Bowie's shows, with Live Nation offering millions for a 2014 date at Olympic Park in East London. AEG was reportedly pitching a plan that included a possible Hyde Park date.
The speculation about David Bowie doing live shows is not unreasonable. As previously stated, Bowie has performed publicly since 2006 and his most recent album, "The Next Day" debuted at #1 in the UK #2 in the U.S. when it was released in March. 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of Bowie's first single, "Liza Jane." – Staff Writers
