Bruce Houghton's DIY Buzz

GOSSIP (Hypebot) –
People are talking about you. Your email list is growing. More people are coming to shows. It's starting to feel like you've got buzz. But how do you know who is talking about you and what they are saying?

Measuring band buzz and all the data that surrounds an artist will be a top issue for the music industry in 2009. With so many new avenues available for music discovery and promotion, knowing where buzz is coming from and how to utilize it is more an issue than ever. New companies like Band Metrics are developing sophisticated tracking tools. (Hypebot readers will have access to a limited number of Band Metrics beta invites soon.) But to get started now, here are three free basic tools to help track your buzz:

  • GOOGLE ALERTS – Sweeps the web and delivers buzz to your inbox.
  • TWITTER SEARCH – Track your buzz on this popular micro-blogging service.
  • WHOS TALKIN – Social media search. (Thanks to Neil Cartwright of MillionMedia for the tipping us off to this week old site.)
