NASHVILLE (CelebrityAccess) — Grammy Award-winning country/folk singer-songwriter Guy Clark died on May 17th in Nashville after a long illness. He was 74.
While he was born in Texas, Mr. Clark was a longtime fixture of the Nashville music scene, where he helped to define the outlaw and progressive country sound. Mr. Clark served as a mentor to artists such as Steve Earle and his home served as an open house to songwriters in the 1970s.
While Clark was perhaps best known for his hits "L.A. Freeway" and "Desperados Waiting for a Train" he also penned songs for artists such as Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner, Hayes Carll, Brad Paisley, John Denver, Alan Jackson, Rodney Crowell, The Highwaymen, and Kenny Chesney.
He also released 14 studio albums with the most recent, 2013's "My Favorite Picture of You" reaching #12 on the US country album charts and won Clark a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2014. His 2006 album "Workbench Songs" was nominated for "Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album" at the Grammy Awards.
Over the past decade, Mr. Clark was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting by the Americana Music Association.
Mr. Clark was predeceased by his second wife, songwriter and artist, Susanna Clark, who died in 2012. Guy had one son, Travis Clark, from his first marriage to folksinger Susan Spaw. – Staff Writers
