Hamiton Sweeps Tonys In Record Numbers

NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — James Cordon hosted The 70th Annual Tony Awards. The ceremony was held on June 12th and broadcast on CBS from the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The awards recognize the apex of achievement in Broadway productions for the 2015-2016 season.

Hamilton received a record-setting 16 nominations, winning 11 total. The revival of The Color Purple won two awards. The Humans won four Tony Awards, and the revival productions of plays Long Day's Journey into Night and A View from the Bridge each took home two awards.

In response to the shooting Sunday that left at least 50 people dead in a crowded nightclub in Orlando, Florida, "Hamilton" dropped its use of muskets in its performance. Many stars also wore a silver ribbon to show solidarity according to AP.

Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda gave an emotional acceptance speech. In a tone and tempo fitting his award winning Hamilton he spoke to his sadness and anger toward Orlando shootings.
