LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Sony expects “Hotel Transylvania 2” to be No. 1 in 33 of 37 international territories, according to media tracking firm Rentrak. From those territories, the film is projected to more than double the take of the first film in the franchise, which opened with $42.5 million and grossed $148.3 in theaters.
“The Intern,” from Time Warner Inc.’s had a strong opening weekend at $18.2 million and came in at number two this weekend.
“The film has enjoyed positive reviews and shows a different side of De Niro that is drawing accolades across the board and thus the film should play well for the long haul,” Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian wrote.
The overall gross of the weekend’s films was $135.4 million, up nearly 21% compared with the same weekend period last year. The year-to-date box office revenue is up 6.4%.
