Hugh's Room In Toronto Closes, Cancels Shows

TORONTO (CelebrityAccess) — Hugh’s Room, one of Toronto's best known roots and folk music clubs, shut its doors on Friday and may be facing bankruptcy.

According to the Toronto Star, venue owner Richard Carson said he has canceled a week's worth of upcoming shows and is weighing his options for the future of the venue.

“I’m basically insolvent and I’m going to be taking the next few days to figure out what my options are,” Carson told the Star.

“I have not filed for bankruptcy. I would like to figure out a way to continue. I don’t know if that’s going to be possible, so I just need a few days. Right now, I don’t feel it’s fair to go on in the dire current situation that we’re in,” he added.

Carson opened the 200-capacity venue in 2001 and it has been a popular stage in Toronto since. Last year, the club was a runner up for both Best Music Room and Best Jazz club in alt news and local entertainment weekly Now Toronto. Carson told the Star that the closure affects 35 full and part-time workers.- Staff Writers
