LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — The Oscar nominations are in for 2017 and unsurprisingly, the Academy voters showered the show business musical "La La Land" with nominations. The film earned 14 nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Director and putting it in a three-way tie with "Titanic" and "All About Eve" for the most nominations in Oscar history.
Other films earning a spot in the best picture category included "Moonlight" (eight nominations total), "Fences" (four), and "Hidden Figures" (three). Also in the race for Best Picture were Crime drama "Hell or High Water"; science fiction adventure "Arrival"; "Manchester By The Sea," a drama about a New England handyman thrust into a difficult situation; and Mel Gibson's World War II film "Hacksaw Ridge."
Gibson also took a nomination for Best Director for "Hacksaw Ridge," a surprising turn of fortune for the director who had been both reviled and ostracized by his Hollywood colleagues in the wake of some unfortunate off-camera incidents that included an alleged series of anti-Semitic and threatening remarks during an arrest for drunk driving in 2006.
This year, the Academy eschewed its traditional press conference announcement, and instead, read the list of nominees during an audience and press-free broadcast carried on Oscars.com, "Good Morning America" and other platforms.
Jimmy Kimmel has been brought aboard to serve as host for the awards show, which will be broadcast on Feb. 26th.
