The Institute for International Research set the dates for a new conference devoted to tackling the business challenges faced by an increasingly embattled music industry. "Perfect Pitch" takes place June 24-26 at the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
"The threat from digital piracy is only part of the problem," said Matt Godson, Marketing Director of the Perfect Pitch conference. "The relationship between the artist, the label and the consumer is fundamentally changing. The big challenge is to devise profitable business models that recognize this fact."
Sessions at the conference will cover potential new sources of revenue for an increasingly embattled industry. Merchandizing options, opportunities to leverage sales through brand association and the surprise windfall that music soundtracks can represent. Witness the success of "Buena Vista Social Club" and "Oh Brother! Where Art Thou."
Confirmed participants at the event include representatives from Epic Records, Vivendi Universal, Virgin Records and Motown, as well as Morgan Stanley, AOL Music and Miramax Films. The event is supported by Variety Magazine as the official media partner for the event.
Added Godson, "The time for schmoozing and partying at music industry events is over. The music industry, at some point, has to tackle these life threatening issues head on. The business side of the equation needs to be resolved into strategies that are going to ensure that companies stay profitable. If they don't, everyone loses – the industry, the artist, and ultimately the consumer."
