SANTIAGO (CelebrityAccess) – The collapse of a building housing a nightclub in downtown Santiago left three dead and several people seriously injured.
According to Agence France-Presse, Santiago police said that the building was an authorized nightclub but the collapse may have occurred because the venue's maximum capacity was exceeded during a concert by British punk band Doom.
"What happened was that more people were in the club than should have been present," Police Chief Hugo Insulza told reporters.
"There was a crush of people. Even after the venue reached its full capacity, people kept pushing to get in. That led to the collapse of a containment fence that fell on people inside," an official from the national emergency office ONEMI added.
The club's administrator has been placed under arrest while the incident is being investigated. – Staff Writers
