LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Another weekend, another super hero movie, and another in a seemingly endless parade of sequels. This weekend it was "Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming" to don his spandex and debut with an estimated $117.0M in domestic revenue and $257.0M worldwide, according to figures compiled by comScore.
Is this really what we want from the cinema? Endless retellings of what is essentially the same shopworn story, with nearly identical characters, themes and worst of all, sequels plotted out like the ticking of a metronome into the distant future? It's certainly not what I want and explains why I haven't gone to the movies in a few years. But the kids keep going I guess so what do I know?
Last week's returning champion Universal's "Despicable Me 3" slid to #2 worldwide, adding a respectable, though estimated $173.0M to its cumulative take over the weekend.
Paramount's "Transformers: The Last Knight" malingered at the #3 spot, adding a worldwide total of $24.4M over the weekend.
