SXSW Announces 2016 Music Hackathon

(Hypebot) –
The SXSW Music Hackathon will return for its third year with programmers, designers, musicians and digital artists teaming up to create music tech innovations. Using their programming know-how and a collection of music-tech APIs, teams will compete for $10,000 in prizes.

The SXSW Music Hackathon will begin on Tuesday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m. in Salon D at the Hilton Austin Downtown. Final presentations will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. in Salon D at the Hilton Austin Downtown and will be open to all badges.

This year, hackers will collaborate and compete in three hack categories, with each category vying for big cash prizes and a load of bragging rights:

Commerce: How is money getting to artists and rights-holders and can blockchain technology help?

  • Creation: How can musicians use tech to create and perform music in new ways?

  • Consumer: How can we improve the fan or listener experience?

Joining the hackers as Hackathon artists/entrepreneurs-in-residence this year are Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Ryan Leslie. The judging panel includes Amazon CTO Werner Vogels, VC Selcuk Atli of 500 Startups, musician/producer Young Guru, TechCrunch Editor-at-Large Josh Constine and Pandora VP of Product Chris Becherer.

To participate in the SXSW Music Hackathon Championship interested applicants can apply at http://sxsw.com/music/hackathon. All interested hackers and designers will be reviewed and contacted regarding their selection to participate. SXSW badge registration is not required to participate.

Hackathon Sponsors include Berklee College's Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship, Musikki, Senzari, Rightside, Quantone, Sonos, Postmates, Devpost, Skrapps along with media partners AustinInno.
