PERTH, Australia (CelebrityAccess) — Perth’s brand new Optus Stadium opened its doors for the first time on January 21st, drawing crowds of almost 70,000 to the free event, which featured a preview of the new multiuse stadium.
While the crows fell short of expectations after more than 110,000 tickets had been ‘sold’ for the free event, opening day event organizers seemed content with the turnout.
“We were very happy with the 69,028 people who used their free tickets to enjoy access throughout the Stadium and Stadium Park,” a spokesman for the stadium told Australian press.
The new, $1.6bn multi-purpose stadium operated by VenuesLive, is the third largest in Australia and can accommodate up to 65,000 fans in its most expansive configuration.
Sports at the stadium will debut with Cricket on Jan 28th when Australia takes on England during the Gillette One-Day International. Then, on Feb. 10th, the Fremantle Dockers take on The Collingwood Football Club in what may be the biggest-ever crowd for a standalone women’s sporting event in Australia, with more than 30,000 fans expected to attend the game.
Concerts on the books for the new stadium include a stop on Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’ tour in October.
