Netflix Receives 112 Emmy Nominations

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — The nominations for the 2018 Emmy Awards were announced on Thursday and provided a yet clear indicator that the era of streaming has fully arrived.

Streaming service Netflix led the charge this year, earning 112 nominations and breaking HBO’s 17-year streak of receiving the most nominations for the television award.

Admittedly, Netflix may have had a leg up on the competition. The service pumps out new shows at an alarming rate and is on track to spend up to $8 billion on content this year according to their Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. That puts them well ahead of HBO, who will invest roughly $2.5bn on content in 2018.

Among Netflix’s nominations were Outstanding Drama for their creepy sci-fi thriller “Stranger Things” and Outstanding Comedy for the female-led wrestling epic “Glow.”

While Netflix may have earned the lion’s share of nominations, HBO was competitive and their fantasy saga “Game of Thrones” lead all series with 22 nominations. “Westworld” a re-imagining of the classic Yul Brynner film also proved to be a strong entry and earned 21 nominations for the cable network.

Streaming service Hulu also was recognized, with their dystopian sci-fi drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” earning 20 nominations.

NBC’s venerable “Saturday Night Live” also showed it still had some ump, picking up a 12 Emmy nominations this year, including picks for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che handling hosting duties.
