New Documentary Takes Aim At Lou Pearlman

(CelebrityAccess) — Welcome to the era of documentaries shining lights into the dark corners of the music industry. The latest such corner to be featured is one that was formerly occupied by the late boy band producer Lou Pearlman.

The doc ‘The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story’ which premiered at SXSW this week, was produced for YouTube Originals by Lance Bass, a singer who first made a name for himself with one of Pearlman’s projects N’Sync.

The film follows Pearlman, from his childhood in Queens, through launching groups *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys, and chronicles his later life, including his perpetration of one of the largest Ponzi schemes in American history.

A trailer for the film was released via YouTube and features interviews with former members of his bands such as the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync who allege financial misconduct against Pearlman.

“If Lou didn’t feel bad, then he’s a monster,” N*SYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick said in the trailer.

Interviewees include Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick (*NSYNC), AJ McLean (Backstreet Boys), Aaron Carter and Ashley Parker Angel (OTown).

However, the trailer did not touch on the allegations of sexual misconduct that surrounded Pearlman before he was convicted in 2008 of bilking 1,700 people out of $500 million in a concert investment Ponzi scheme.

Pearlman died in prison in 2016.
