BLANCO, Texas (CelebrityAccess) — Shelley Duvall, an actor  best known for her roles in films such as Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic “The Shining” and the Robert Altman drama “3 Women” died on June 11. She was 75.

Her partner, Dan Gillroy, told the Hollywood Reporter that Duvall died in her sleep from complications of diabetes at her home in Texas.

A Texas native, Duvall was discovered by director Robert Altman, who cast her in his 1970 dark comedy, Brewster McCloud. She would go on to roles in other Altman films, including McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), Nashville (1975), and 3 Women (1977) which won her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a nomination for the British Academy Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

In 1980, Altman selected Duvall to portray Olive Oyl in his frankly bizarre live-action take on the long-running comic strip Popeye, a role that some have argued Duvall was born to play.

In that same year, she was cast as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film The Shining, opposite Jack Nicholas. While the film is now considered an influential contribution to the horror canon, it drew mixed reviews upon release along with awards for Worst Director and Worst Actress for Duvall in 1981.

Duvall’s other roles include the romantic comedy Roxanne with Steven Martin, and the Terry Gilliam science fiction adventure Time Bandits. She retired from acting in 2002 after appearing in the religious comedy Manna From Heaven but returned to the craft in 2022 for a role in the horror film The Forest Hills.
