The 35-year-old Dance Theatre of Harlem is taking a nine-month break to address its financial problems, including a $2.4-million accumulated deficit, according to Newsday.
At a September 21 press conference, founder and director Arthur Mitchell said that despite increased touring and higher earnigns over the past year, the deficit had grown, citing less in contributed income.
Board member Rodney Slater said, "We need to assess where we are, put a succession plan and a business plan in place."
