LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Another in a seemingly endless parade of Lego-themed movies dominated the weekend box office as “The Lego Batman Movie” earned an estimated $55.6 million domestically this weekend, according to data compiled by comScore.
Not to worry if 'Lego Batman' doesn't fill the lego-shaped void in your life, you'll be able to queue up for Warner Bros.’ next Lego spinoff, “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” when it opens in September.
Admittedly, the film didn't have a lot of competition as it faced off against “Fifty Shades Darker,” a sequel to "Fifty Shades of Gray" a movie adaption of the BDSM-themed potboiler of the same name. Ffity Shades earned $46.8 million, coming in at second place.
Keanu Reeves's revenge-wrought sequel “John Wick: Chapter 2” is took the number three spot over the weekend, earning $30 million and positioning itself as a strog contender for the Oscar for "Most Unoriginal Name."
“People really love its unapologetic violence,” said comScore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Rounding out the top five were “Split,” the M. Night Shyamalan thriller that added $9.3 million, for a total of $112.3 million in earnings, and “Hidden Figures” which added an additional $8 million to its cumulative take.
