"Kiss Me Kate" Gets Second Chance

"Kiss Me Kate," which was suppose to close September 23 at Broadway's Martin Beck Theater, got at least a two week reprieve when the cast and crew took an unique 50 percent salary deduction. It is a two part deduction: (1) 25 percent salary and (2) 25 percent contribution to buy tickets to be donated to the American Red Cross volunteers, the Fire Department's Family Crisis Center and several other disaster relief organizations.

Show producer Roger Berlind had asked the unions for a 50 percent salary reduction but was turned down. Five other Broadway musicals already had a 25 percent salary reduction for four weeks instituted.
