(CelebrityAccess) A story about a bit of a spat between Jake Owen and five-time major golf tournament winner Phil Mickelson has been making the rounds because, well, it’s a good story.
Owen, a one handicapper who is a close friend with and has played alongside golfer Jordan Spieth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for the last four years, also happened to be at Spieth’s wedding this past November, and so was Mickelson.
Owen told a story about it on Barstool’s “ForePlay” podcast about when he confronted Mickelson about the pay-per-view event from the previous day when Mickelson played a match-play round against Tiger Woods. Apparently the country singer, after building up some liquid courage, asked Mickelson if he could get a roughly $30 refund that he and millions of others “wasted” on the lackluster event that ended up being broadcast for free.
“I was like, ‘Hey, Phil, you owe me f–king $29.99 for wasting four hours of my life with the s–ttiest golf I’ve ever seen,’” Owen said. “’… I want my $29.99 back and apologize to me for some s–tty golf.’”
Mickelson apparently responded by whipping out a wad of cash and handing Owen a hundy.
“I won 90,000 of these yesterday. Take one of these and go f–k yourself,” the three-time Masters champion apparently said. The payout for “The Match” was $9 million.
Mickelson confirmed it on Twitter: “True Story.”

Of course, the story has gone viral with headlines using terms like “epic,” which Owen agreed may be a little OTT.
