Santana, U2 Top Music Lovers' Holiday CD Wish List

Who's on the top of music lovers' CD wish lists this holiday season? VH1
commissioned a telephone poll Nov. 6-17 to find out. In a random national sample of
1,015 20-49 year-olds who listen to pre-recorded music, these are the results:

Santana's "Shaman" tops the overall list, followed by U2. But the VH1 poll also broke
down results by major regions in the U.S. and found that different artists ranked # 1 in
the Northeast, Midwest, South and the West. Creed topped wish lists in the Northeast,
Santana ranked #1 in the Midwest, Dixie Chicks ruled in the South and U2 topped the
poll in the West.

The Top 10 CDs People Most Want This Holiday Season are:

1. Santana – "Shaman"
2. U2 – "Best of 1990-2000"
3. Creed – "Weathered"
4. Rolling Stones – "Forty Licks"
5. Elton John – "Greatest Hits 1970-2002"
6. Dixie Chicks – "Home"
7. Elvis Presley – "30 Number 1 Hits"
8. Movie Soundtrack – "8 Mile"
9. Toby Keith – "Unleashed"
10. Dave Matthews Band – "Busted Stuff"

"The record labels traditionally save their big guns for the 4th quarter, and this year is no
exception with new releases from superstar artists like Faith Hill and Santana and
collections from rock legends like U2, the Rolling Stones and Elton John," said Rick
Krim, EVP, Music and Talent, VH1. "Music buyers have in the past gravitated to the big
event releases and collections launched for the holiday season, and our research shows
that the trend will continue as 2002 comes to a close."

Other intriguing findings in the survey …

** Guys still like to rock. Nine of the top 10 artists for men in the
survey were rock bands, including Rolling Stones at #1 with their
compilation "40 Licks." The other rock artists in descending order are
U2, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creed, Santana, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band.

** Dave Matthews Band is big among the younger set. The band's two
releases "Busted Stuff" and "Live at Folsom" are in the Top 10 for the
20-29 group. "Eminem Show" and the soundtrack for "8 Mile" rank #1 and
#2 for this group.

** Women tend to be more appreciative of Eminem. The soundtrack for the
Eminem film "8 Mile" landed in the #6 spot among all women while
"Eminem Show" ranked #13. Among men, "8 Mile" showed at #18 while
"Eminem Show" landed at #24.

** As expected, the more mature artists showed up in the 40-49 demo. The
latest releases from Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Paul
McCartney and James Taylor all ranked in the top 10 along with new
releases from Rolling Stones, Santana and Elvis.** Who was popular
across all three demo groups in the survey (20-29, 30-39 and 40-49),
