NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — On March 2nd, Spotify announced that they have officially passed the 50 million subscriber mark, an increase of 20% in just six months.
The figures represent the strongest period of reported subscriber growth in their history
Spotify's latest subscriber numbers put them well ahead of Apple, who, in the last publicly available subscriber count, reported in December 2016 that they had just crossed the 20 million subscriber threshold.
Extrapolating from the numbers, Spotify appears to be adding 1.8 million paying users a month to Apple's 1 million users a month, based on Apple's reported user growth between September and December 2016.
However, Spotify is still not turning a profit and is still facing the burning question of scheduling for their much-discussed IPO. As well, Spotify continues to remain out of contract with major labels while their rivals such as Apple Music and Pandora have signed multi-price licensing agreements with major music companies.
