LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Rapper Remy Ma managed to pull an upset after she won the award for best female hip-hop artist at the BET Awards on Sunday, ending Minaj's seven-year winning streak.
Remy last won the award in 2005 before she was sentenced to prison in connection with a 2007 shooting in New York.
"I wanna thank God first and foremost," said Ma, in accepting her award. "You can make mistakes and come back."
While Remy had a big night, it was Beyonce who ruled the awards show. Beyonce took home five trophies, including wins for album of the year, best female r&b/pop artist, video of the year, and viewers choice. Kendrick Lamar won the award for best male hip-hop artist and best new artist went to Chance the Rapper.
Bruno Mars won his first BET Award, taking the trophy for best male R&B/pop artist and serving as the opening performer for the awards ceremony with his hit "Perm."
Chance was also recognized with a humanitarian award New Edition, who were the subject of a new three-part biopic on BET earlier this year, earned the lifetime achievement award.
Leslie Jones of "Saturday Night Live" hosted the four-hour show, which took place at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
