homeBrew From Denmark

Monday the 10th of September was the release date, of the first ever, Danish downbeat compilation cd, homeBrew. The homebrew team consists of professional producers, musicians and in general people with good ideas…

homeBrew has so far been 3 years in the making, the project originates in the world of trip hop, but over the years it has snuck into the digital universe of downbeat. We started out with 50 demo tapes, which were boiled down to the 9 artists featured on this cd. Most of the featured artists have their roots in the hip hop culture; at the same time they have all had the nerve and desire to explore new musical pastures and expressions.

The weight that is normally put on the vocals in hip-hop has been moved onto the composition of the tracks. The focus is now on the beats and effects, which prove the ingenuity of the producers.

The programming should be evident, but the origin of the used sample should stay obscure in the back ground, so that the potpourri of sounds and beats come through as one entity. In a sense downbeat- and thereby homebrew- is a technically created universe.

Downbeat has never had a major commercial breakthrough here in Denmark, even though it has hit big in the underground scenes in Germany and especially England, where labels such as Mowax and Ninja Tune are at the forefront of this movement. These labels and their music were also the inspiration for the man behind this project, Jens Thomsen aka JT from the moon, when he decided to put together this cd. With the help of the many enthusiastic artists involved with the project, he wanted to put out an album that would kick start the genre and get it the publicity that it, in his, and our minds deserve.

homeBrew was started in the underground with out any help or interference from any established major label. Therefore we our selves have financed the project with love for the music and 6000 dkr of our own money, and any surplus will go towards printing LP’s. A lot of blood, sweat and tears, plus uncountable hours of volunteer work has been put into this project. Now after 3 years in the making with the exchange of artist and songs homebrew is finally ready for its release.

The homeBrew cd will be sold in major cities from the 10th of September, and until then it can be heard on the net at WWW.HOMEBREW.NU.
