NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — Veteran journalist Charlie Rose’s career at CBS came to a sudden halt on Tuesday after the broadcaster announced that it was severing ties with Rose over alleged sexual misconduct.

“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately,” CBS News President David Rhodes wrote in a note to staff and obtained by the Los Angeles Times. “This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program. Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place.”

PBS, which has presented a nightly talk show featuring Rose since 1991, also severed ties with the journalist. Bloomberg also dropped Rose’s interview show from their news network, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The firings follow a Washington Post story, which reported that eight women have leveled allegations against Rose, claiming that he subjected them to inappropriate behavior in the workplace, including unwanted sexual advances, appearing nude in their presence, or groping them.

In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Rose apologized for his “inappropriate behavior.”

“I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate,” he said. “I always felt that I pursued shared feelings though I now realize that I was mistaken,” Rose wrote.

Rose’s departure from CBS will leave a hole in “CBS This Morning” which he co-hosted with Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell.
