Lollapalooza Announces Colombia Expansion

BOGOTÁ, Colombia (CelebrityAccess) — C3 Presents' festival Lollapalooza is continuing its global expansion with the launch of a new Lolla-branded event in the South American nation of Colombia.

The new, two-day festival will take place in Bogotá’s central Simón Bolívar Park in the fall of 2016 and will be the 5th location for the festival brand since expanding outside of North America.

Past expansions for Lolla include a number of other South American markets, including Chile, Brazil and Argentina and Europe as well, with a festival in Berlin, Germany. A planned expansion into Israel's Tel Aviv in 2013 did not develop after funding fell through for C3 Presents' local partner.

“Europe is obviously saturated. We look for super fast-growing, robust economies. There’s a press article every day about what’s happening in Colombia,” Charlie Walker, a co-founder of Austin, Texas, based C3 told the Wall Street Journal. “South America isn’t very crowded. And now the Lollapalooza brand is big enough that people know about it before we get there.”

Originally developed as a North American touring festival, the Lollapalooza brand lapsed after 1997. After an abortive restart in 2003, the festival returned successfully in 2005 as a single location event at Chicago's Grant Park. – Staff Writers
