ATLANTA, GA (CelebrityAccess) — The Atlanta Hawks have filed plans detailing major upgrades in the works for Philips Arena.
According to Arena Digest, a construction permit application filed by the team seeks to demolish more than 100,000 square feet of the building's interior and include a complete interior rehab of North Club and Owner’s Suite.
The estimated cost of the project is $192.5 million with the team contributing $50 million while taxpayers are on the hook to the tune of $142.5 million. As part of the agreement for the renovation, the Hawks extended their lease to remain at the venue through 2046.
The team's plan to renovate the facility was first disclosed last fall, with the team stating that the arena would undergo a multi-phase refurb that would address multiple areas of the facility.
Work on the upgrades are expected to start this summer, with most of the renovation taking place between NBA seasons, Arena Digest said. – Staff Writers
