AUSTRALIA (CelebrityAccess) – Sum 41 has canceled its entire Australian tour, including its co-headlining spot at the Good Things Festival, due to frontman Deryck Whibley’s battle with pneumonia. The band announced on December 5 that Whibley’s condition, as advised by Australian doctors, made him too unwell to perform.
In a message shared on social media, the band said, “It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed. We were beyond excited to deliver this tour… and connect with our Aussie fans once more.” The statement added, “Now that we’re here though, and under the guidance and direction of multiple Australian doctors, it’s clear that Deryck is too unwell to perform. We understand and appreciate your disappointment – we’re gutted too.”
Though Sum 41 can’t make it, the Good Things Festival will still take place across Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Korn will headline, along with acts like Violent Femmes, Jet, Northlane, and Billy Corgan. Festival organizers expressed their support for Whibley, saying, “Deryck’s health and well-being is the focus and priority, though, and we hope you will join us in sending him well wishes for his recovery.”
Sum 41’s tour was scheduled to support Heaven :x: Hell, their eighth and final album, released in March. The tour was a key part of their farewell run, which will culminate in their last-ever show at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena in January 2025.
This is the second time the band has had to cancel in Australia due to Whibley’s health, following a similar situation in 2011 when pneumonia forced them to drop out of the Soundwave Festival.
Festival ticket holders can expect refund information soon.
