LONDON (CelebrityAccess) — Sam Smith and Normani won Song of the Year at the 2020 BMI London Awards for their hit “Dancing with a Stranger.”
On recording the single, Normani told Billboard the collaboration with Smith came about during a chance meeting at a recording studio when Smith asked “Do you want to jump on it?”
Since then, the track peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Radio Songs and Adult Top 40 charts, and accrding to Billboard ranked #4 on the list of the most played song on U.S. radio in 2019, after receiving over three billion audience impressions.
The win was Smith’s tenth BMI London Award and the second for Normani.
Other winners for this year include Ed Sheeran, who took home six trophies for his hits in the 30 most-performed pop songs written by UK or European songwriters. The songs include ‘Beautiful People’, ‘Cross Me’, ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Tip of My Tongue’, ‘What Am I’, and ‘2002’.
BMI Million-Air Awards were also presented to a host of artists who crossed the million broadcast performance milestone, including Van Morrison, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Sting, Bernie Marsden, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Peter Gabriel, and Ed Sheeran.
Due to the pandemic, the awards took place virtually this year, with winners announced via BMI’s digital and social media channels.
