DORSET, UK (CelebrityAccess) – Johnnie Walker, the pioneering BBC radio DJ renowned for his influential role in British music broadcasting, passed away on December 31, 2024, at 79. He died at his home in Dorset after a prolonged battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease that impairs breathing.

Born Peter Dingley on March 30, 1945, in Solihull, England, Walker began his broadcasting career in the mid-1960s with the offshore pirate radio station Radio Caroline. His rebellious spirit and eclectic music selections quickly made him a household name. In 1969, he transitioned to BBC Radio 1, where he continued championing emerging artists and diverse musical genres.

Throughout his illustrious career, Walker hosted several notable programs, including “Sounds of the 70s” and “The Rock Show” on BBC Radio 2. His passion for music and engaging presentation style earned him a dedicated following and numerous accolades. In 2003, he received the BASCA Gold Badge Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to Britain’s music and entertainment industry.

Walker was married twice. His first marriage to Frances Kum in 1971 resulted in two children: a daughter, Beth, and a son, Sam. The couple later divorced. In December 2002, he married Tiggy Jarvis, who was by his side during his final years.

In October 2024, Walker announced his retirement from radio after 58 years, citing health reasons. He continued to present his shows from home until his passing. His widow, Tiggy, expressed profound pride in his resilience and dedication, stating, “He remained his charming, humorous self to the end. What a strong, amazing man.”

RIP.
