City of Hope's Music and Entertainment Industry fund-raising has selected Mark Mays, president and chief executive officer of Clear Channel Communications, as its 2005 Spirit of Life Honoree. Mays will be presented with City of Hope's Spirit of Lifeaward — the highest honor bestowed by the world-renowned cancer research and treatment center at a star-studded gala on September 29. Proceeds will benefit research, treatment and education programs for cancer and other life-threatening diseases at City of Hope Cancer Center.
The Spirit of Life Award is presented annually to individuals who have made notable contributions to both their community and profession. The Music and Entertainment Industry fund-raising group for City of Hope selected Mays as this year's honoree for his role in leading Clear Channel's efforts to effect positive change in each of the global media and entertainment markets the company serves.
Mays takes to heart the company's commitment to serving local communities through his involvement in a variety of professional and civic activities. He plays a leadership role with the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and serves on the boards of Junior Achievement's San Antonio Chapter, the Alamo Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, the United Way of San Antonio and the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.
"I am honored to be the recipient of this year's Spirit of Life Award and to be associated with such a world-class institution as City of Hope," said Mays. "I have great respect for the technological strides that the hospital has made in its groundbreaking research, treatment and education programs for patients fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases."
"Mark Mays embodies the visionary leadership that is central to The Spirit of Life Award," said Gregg Harrison, a partner at entertainment industry law firm Gang, Tyre and Brown and president of City of Hope's Music and Entertainment Industry fund-raising group. "He is a well respected and admirable leader in the media and entertainment industries, and we are so happy that we are able to recognize his achievements and honor him in this way." –Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen
