Artist Snapshot: Crystal Castles

(CelebrityAccess) – Crystal Castles unveiled the new track “Fleece” on August 15 by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1, taken from their forthcoming new album AMNESTY (I), out now on Casablanca Records.

Moving glacially between ethereal techno pop and speaker-shattering rave breakdowns, “Fleece” is another fascinating insight into the breathtaking sonic and emotional palette on AMNESTY (I).

In addition, Crystal Castles had a special in-store performance at Rough Trade East in London on Tuesday, August 23. This comes ahead of the band playing the BBC Radio 1/NME Stage at Reading & Leeds Festivals later this month, before continuing on to further European and North American headline and festival tour dates, with more U.K. shows to be announced soon.

Known for their chaotic live shows and visceral, melancholic homemade productions, Crystal Castles released a trilogy of critically acclaimed albums between 2008-2013. Their last album III was the Tumblr and Hype Machine album of the year for 2013, and NME‘s #4 album of the year. In 2015 they released the standalone tracks “Frail” and “Deicide,” with new member Edith Frances.

Across its 12 tracks, AMNESTY (I) – the new album from CRYSTAL CASTLES released on August 19 via Casablanca Records – explores the sonic and atmospheric range. From gothic electronic paeans to distorted digital raves, from cinematic synth and noise crescendos to hip-hop and trap infused synth pop, it is uniformly compelling, uncompromising and anchored in feeling.

Over the course of the last few months Crystal Castles – consisting of Ethan Kath and Edith Frances – revealed a string of tracks that have captured the attention of music critics and fans alike. Melissa Locker of ELLE (7/26/16) has praised “Char,” an electronic lullaby: “If there was such a thing as a dance club haunted by ghosts, this is what it would sound like: Frances’ ethereal voice floating over a delicate synth structure and an ominous undertone. It’s wonderful.” Brennan Carley of SPIN (6/29/16) hailed “Concrete” as “… a loud, frenzied piece of music.”

In support of the album, Crystal Castles are preparing to embark on a fall run of U.S. live dates, kicking off on September 6 in Carborro, NC. The trek will take them through 21 cities including Dallas, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Boston, wrapping in mid-October. They’ve played only a small handful of shows in the past two years, so the new dates present an opportunity to experience the new songs from AMNESTY (I).
