New Musical Centre In Hamburg

HAMBURG: Plans have been laid out by The Hamburger association for trade development to turn The Hamburger Kiez, a special village near Hamburg, into the centre for all music life in the Hansestadt. The EU is putting 12 million DM in the project.

By publishing the concept for the new musical centre, “Musikstandort St. Pauli”, the trade association has caused some commotion in the Hansestadt, because the plan demands that music companies, producers, clubs and promoters are getting whole new milieus. The concept for the new music centre is leaning on a decision in the EU to support so called structure-weak areas passing through industrial and social changes.

When the music company Universal moved from Hamburg to Berlin it was a shock for the city. The senate of Hamburg has decided to take massive measures concerning the local position in the music business in order to secure that Hamburg keeps its role as the German musical capital and have put another 12 million DM into the project. Up until now a total of 48 million DM have been raised for the project.
