TAMPA, FL (CelebrityAccess) — Tampa City officials are weighing the pros and cons of hosting music festivals in the city in the wake of drug incidents and overdose deaths a this year's Sunset Music Festival.
A 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old women died and nearly 60 other people were hospitalized after attending the EDM festival at Raymond James Stadium over the Memorial Day weekend, according to Tampa police. Police told the Tampa Bay Times that the majority of those incidents were drug-related.
Now the city council is discussing ways to prevent similar scenarios at Sunset and other events in the city, with some of those officials advocating that the city not host such events in the future.
"This is not the type of event Tampa wants to be known for," Mayor Bob Buckhorn told ABC affiliate WFTS.
The City Council is set to meet with department heads of the city's public safety services, as well as the Tampa Sports Authority to discuss their concerns and look for ways to prevent such issues going forward. – Staff Writers
