POMPANO BEACH, FL (CelebrityAccess) — Broward County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night arrested a suspect in the slaying of Jahseh Onfroy, the 20-year-old rapper known as XXXTentacion.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Dedrick Devonshay Williams, 22, of Pompano Beach, Fla., was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. in Pompano Beach following a traffic stop, on charges including first-degree murder, as well as grand theft auto in connection with the alleged theft of a motor vehicle.
Security camera footage of the attack showed at least two individuals appeared to be involved in the robbery and the BCSO said detectives are seeking additional suspects in connection with the murder.
Onfroy was killed on Monday while in his car outside of a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Fla. An earlier statement by the BCSO stated that the motivation of the attack appears to have been an armed robbery.
XXXTentacion, a gifted but controversial rapper was part of a generation of artists that built reputations around streaming music services such as SoundCloud.
Following his death, XXXTentacion’s music has been breaking streaming records, with Spotify promoting his tracks with “rest in peace” tribute on its main page and placement in key playlists such as RapCaviar.
The promotion is an abrupt shift for the streaming service, which, just weeks ago, pulled XXXTentacion’s music from all of its promoted playlists as part of a new “hateful conduct” policy. The streamer quickly retracted the policy in the face of outcry from the public and industry figures.
