LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — John Singleton, a noted director behind films such as Boyz n the Hood and 2 Fast 2 Furious, has slipped into a coma eight days after suffering a stroke.

According to the Associated Press, Singleton fell ill last week after a trip to Costa Rica. While under medical care for the malady, he suffered from a stroke that was initially reported to be mild, but has since proven to be apparently more serious.

The 51-year-old director’s condition was revealed in a court filing from his mother, Shelia Ward, who is seeking to be made a temporary conservator for Singelton, able to make financial and medical decisions for him.

In the court filing, Singleton’s mother said he was engaged in “engaged in several business projects” at the time of the stroke that required decisions and the court filing suggests that Singleton has suffered “major impairment to motor skills and psychological functions, including his ability to reason logically” from the stroke.

In 1991, Singleton became the first black director to be nominated for an Academy Award for his iconic film Boyz In the Hood. The film, about the lives of young men in South Central Los Angeles, featured Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.

Singleton also helmed Poetic Justice (1993); Higher Learning (1996); Rosewood (1997); Shaft (2000); 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and Abduction (2011) among films.
