WASHINGTON, D.C. (CelebrityAccess) — The Librarian of Congress, following a recommendation from the Register of Copyrights, has officially published a rule establishing multiple exemptions to technological copyright protections.
Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), bypassing these protections is typically prohibited for copyrighted materials, such as books, movies, video games, and software.
However, based on advice from the Register of Copyrights, the Librarian may authorize exceptions when restrictions impede fair, lawful use. This rulemaking process involves public and stakeholder input, facilitated by the U.S. Copyright Office.
Following the latest review, all but one existing exemption was renewed, and new exemptions were introduced in three categories. These include expanded permissions for educational uses of audiovisual materials, accessibility aids for print-disabled users, and additional rights for repairing consumer devices like smart home appliances.
