WATERLOO, Ontario (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — Blackberry mobile phone makers Research In Motion (RIM) have joined the growing throng of cloud-based music services with the launch of BBM Music.
RIM advertises BBM Music as a social and viral music discovery platform that allows users to build an evolving 'community based' library and share it amongst their friends. At launch, the service has a catalog of millions of songs from major labels such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI.
According to RIM, the Omnifone-powered service will allow users to build a profile with up to 50 songs that can be shared amongst your friends. With each friend added, users can grow their list of music as the songs of the friend's profile become available. The handset app will include a visual timeline of recent changes to assist in discovering new music and showing who's added new friends or new tracks. Users will be able to listen to full tracks.
A closed beta trial of the BBM Music service has started in Canada, the United States and the UK. The BBM Music service is expected to be commercially available to customers later this year for a monthly subscription of $4.99 (USD) in Australia, Canada, Columbia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States.
