Performers including Annie Lennox, Will Young, McFly and Lionel Richie will be entertaining the crowd at the concert, which is being broadcast live on ITV at 6.55pm, with part of it being shown in 3D.

Others will be involved in manning the phones backstage during the event, which is to celebrate the trust's 30th birthday and raise funds.

The trust, which offers support, training, mentoring and financial assistance to young people aged between 14 and 30, has a host of celebrity ambassadors including Stephen Fry, the actor and writer, who attended the reception.

He said: "If we are to have a cohesive society that works, we must embrace our young and recognise they're part of our world, not apart from it. I've been a drug addict, I've been in prison, and I’ve run away from home, I know exactly what its like."
