CALGARY (CelebrityAccess) – Canadian country music’s biggest night of the year, the CCMA Awards, went off without a hitch Sunday evening at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome.
This year’s event was co-hosted by CCMA Male Artist of the Year Dallas Smith and Billboard’s latest record-smasher, Billy Ray Cyrus.
The hosts took the stage to open the show with their own individual musical performances before inviting a variety of other acts to the stage to share some of their biggest hits, including Meghan Patrick, Old Dominion and Tebey among many others. Cyrus, who has spent the summer atop of the charts thanks to his collab with Lil Nas X on mega-hit “Old Town Road,” also performed his 1992 smash, “Achy Breaky Heart.”
Going into the show, Alberta-based singer-songwriter Brett Kissel led the male nominations with five nods. He took home the Apple Music Fans’ Choice Award. Meanwhile, Tenille Townes and Lindsay Ell tied for most female nominations with four acknowledgments each. Townes was named Female Artist of The Year and won in the Single of The Year category for her song “Somebody’s Daughter,” while Ell took home the award for Interactive Artist or Group of the Year.
The show, which travels across the country each year, last came to the city 14 years ago. This was the ninth time Calgary has hosted.
