Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery, 88, a member of the legendary Light Crust Doughboys and a banjo innovator, died June 6 at a Dallas hospital. He suffered from leukemia.
Regarded as the world's greatest tenor (four string) banjo player, he is known for melding Western swing with Dixieland-style jazz banjo.
The Doughboys received three Grammy nominations in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
