Legendary Banjo Player Dies At 88

Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery, 88, a member of the legendary Light Crust Doughboys and a banjo innovator, died June 6 at a Dallas hospital. He suffered from leukemia.

Regarded as the world's greatest tenor (four string) banjo player, he is known for melding Western swing with Dixieland-style jazz banjo.

The Doughboys received three Grammy nominations in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
