MTV Pulls The Plug On Oz VH1, Awards Show

SYDNEY (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — MTV Australia is preparing to pull the plug on its VH1 channel in exchange for a 'new' offering – MTV Classic.

According to Billboard, the new channel with debut on May 1st on the Foxtel, Austar and Optus pay-TV networks and be aimed at the 25-40 demographic, programming prominent artists from the 1980s onward.

The new channel will be launched with a live music event that MTV Australia describes as a "one-off live music event featuring classic Australian and international acts that have influenced today's music culture." Unfortunately for fans of the MTV Australia Awards, the one-off event will take the place of the 5-year-old award show on MTV's calendar.

MTV hasn't said if this marks the end of the award show's run, or if it merely on hiatus.

"The door is still open regarding the MTV Australia Award," a spokesperson for MTV told Billboard. "We still very much believe in the Awards franchise,. However this year, as we start a new decade – and launch a new channel – we thought that we'd try something new with our flagship music event." – CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
