BERLIN (CelebrityAccess) — German performing rights society GEMA announced the release of its AI Charter, seeking to create a framework for the fair and sustainable use generative artificial intelligence and the protection of creative professionals.

“Generative AI offers opportunities, but at the same time also poses considerable risks to the rights and livelihoods of authors. We believe that human creativity is the focus and that the use of human-created musical works in the context of generative AI must be treated transparently and fairly remunerated. We make this clear in the AI Charter,” stated Dr. Tobias Holzmüller, CEO of GEMA.

A.I. technology, particularly large language models, have made siginificiant strides in recent years, allowing for the creation of new musical works. However, many of those systems are trained using human-created intellectual property, the use of which must be fairly remunerated.

GEMA’s AI Charter includes core principles such as the protection of intellectual property, fair participation of creatives in value creation, sustainability, and transparency and responsibility of AI providers.

“We creative professionals have frustratingly become accustomed to the fact that every few years billion-dollar corporations bring new business models onto the market and use our works for this purpose without involving us in the value creation. With the high-speed development surrounding generative AI, it is therefore all the more important to remember why appropriate involvement of creatives is essential and on what basis AI services are even able to generate their output: They are the results of human creativity!” stated GEMA’s Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Ralf Weigand.

GEMA’s charter AI comes just a month after the organization became the first collecting society in the world to create a licensing model for generative artificial intelligence (AI).
