Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Renovations Planned

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The Music Center has announced plans for the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to undergo renovation in 2013, Variety has reported.

The 41-year-old music hall will be upgraded to increase backstage space and provide new rehearsal space. Unfortunately, this space will come at the expense of offices currently occupied by staff of the current tenants, including the Los Angeles Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the L.A. Master Chorale.

To house these staffers, a new office complex will need to be constructed at the corner of Grant and Temple. The offices will also serve as a home to Center Theater Group personnel.

Other upgrades will focus on the acoustic qualities of the performance space and will take place during the summer over the next five years, a time when the building sees little use.

There was some confusion about the actual planned time for the renovation. The L.A. Opera's general director expressed some surprise when Music Center president Stephen Roundtree restated the time frame for the renovations at 2013 from the previously announced date of 2011. 2013 is the 200th anniversary of the births of both Verdi and Wagner.

"I hope it's 2012 or '14," Domingo said "It will be difficult to look for an opera house to celebrate those anniversaries."
