Guthrie Theater Goes Dark For The Month Of January

MINNEAPOLIS (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The Guthrie Theater has reportedly furloughed most of their full time staff for a week in the face of a blank calendar at the venue for the month of January.

According to the Star Tribune, the furloughs affect a majority of the 120 full-time employees at the venue, but vary by departments. The Guthrie's website reports that the theatre is closed to the public in January for "maintenance and care." A spokesman for the theater told the Star Tribune that the venue was undergoing some technical upgrades, cleaning carpets and refinishing floors during the downtime.

Guthrie spokeswoman Trish Santini told the Star Tribune that employees this isn't the first time for employee furloughs at The Guthrie and that there have been several such outings since the venue relocated to its new $125 million dollar riverfront home in 2006.

The theater closed out its last fiscal year in the red by more than $430,000, the Star-Tribune reported. The theater's calendar shows no events in January and early February with a presentation of Tristan & Yseult planned to start in late February. – Staff Writers
