ISTANBUL (CelebrityAccess) — The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deadly New Year's Day terrorist attack on a nightclub in Instanbul.
According to the New York Times, Turkish authorities are engaged in a manhunt for the gunman, who killed a police officer guarding the club before going on a shooting rampage with an assault rifle inside of the venue, leaving at least 39 dead and injuring 60 more.
Witnesses describe at least three attackers, but Turkish security forces hve only released photographs of one alleged gunman. State media reported that at least eight suspects had been detained in connection with the attack.
The attack came during a period of heightened security measures in the city, with 17,000 police officers on duty, following an alleged coup attempt against Turkish Prime Minister in July 2016. – Staff Writers
